Batik - the Lost Art

Batik - the Lost Art

The batik art comes from the Bali region of Indonesia. It’s a traditional art form practiced by the Indonesian Hindus for thousands of years. The word Batik comes from the Indonesian word “Ambatik” which literally means wax writing. In Batik the color stains are made with molten wax that gives it a unique look after completion.

The revival of this ancient art in India started with Rabindranath Tagore. During his travel to Indonesia Rabindranath Tagore were highly moved by this art form and brought the know how back to Shanti Niketan. This started a new trend of Batik Sarees and dress materials being made in Bengal.
